The three cleaning stages, correct solution concentrations and autoclave cycles for safe daily practice.

Why it matters Proper instrument reprocessing is the foundation of client and practitioner safety.

1. Pre-cleaning Immediately after use, immerse instruments in an enzymatic solution for 10-15 minutes so organic residue does not dry.

2. Disinfection Use a broad-spectrum solution at the concentration stated by the manufacturer. Rinse with deionised water and dry completely.

3. Sterilisation Pouch the instruments with an indicator and sterilise at 134°C for 4 minutes. Log every cycle.

Common mistakes - Overloading the autoclave - Storing on open trays - Skipping biological indicator checks
